Radiant Plasma Spark Generator

The RPG 4700 is a proof of concept add-on plasma ignition capacitor charger-discharger module that is designed to convert a standard low energy ignition spark to a high energy plasma spark. We have made these prototypes available for purchase as an experimental plasma spark plasma spark ignition module for open source engineers and the general public. The RPG 4700 uses a flyback transformer designed to rapidly charge a 450 volt 4.7uF Polypropylene Film capacitor. Polypropylene capacitors tend to self-heal, in other words dielectric does not completely breakdown but vaporizes only a portion of the film leaving the rest intact, a significant improvement over electrolytic capacitors that tend to overheat and explode when used in prolonged high frequency charge discharge cycles as in Racing.


Our custom circuitry minimize transition losses allowing us to reduce the transformer size while maximizing efficiency. The processor senses when current in transformer has decayed to zero and initiates a new charge cycle if the target 425 volts has not been reached. The flyback transformer itself is designed to not cause excessive current or voltage as the processor optimizes charge time, reverse recovery time taking into account reverse bias leakage current.


The built in safety features of the RPG 4700 include automatic detection of discontinuous charging, meaning if the unit is removed from an active power supply with the 450 volt 4.7uf capacitor fully charged, the unit will automatically drain the capacitor in less than 2 seconds, allowing safe handling. With a wide input range from 5 to 24 volts the RPG 4700 can operate from any DC power supply making it ideal for automotive and other portable outdoor high energy plasma applications such as tesla coils.

The RPG 4700 unit is more than just 8 months of research, Aquapulser Engineering has applied over 15 years of industry experience. We've fried over 6 inverters, popped 85 capacitors, killed multiple ignition coils, burnt 100s of diodes and received over 15 nasty shocks in the process of our product development. The result is a state of the art plasma ignition capacitor module with over 97% charging efficiency consuming no more than 26W at peak loads.
